Irving Newman, Photographer 1923 - 2014

Irving Newman passed away at the age of 90 on Sunday morning, January 5th 2014.

At the time of his death Irving lived in Bath, NY. He previously lived in Elmira, NY and New York City. Irving was the son of Louis and Sarah Newman.

Irving was a photographer specializing in publicity and interior design. A World War II veteran, he served overseas in the Army Air Corp’s photo reconnaissance lab. He was born in New York on January 18, 1923. He and his wife Ruth moved to Elmira in 1988.

Irving turned his passion for photography into his life’s work. He also loved movies and performing magic tricks for family and friends. His loving wife of 50 years, Ruth Ellen Newman, died in 1998. Irving is survived by his son, David and his wife, Carol of Crofton, MD; and daughter Anne Lakota and her husband Alex of Kanona, NY. He is also survived by three grandchildren, five great- grandchildren, and his brother Leonard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Salvation Army.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 8th at Congregation Kol Ami, 1008 West Water Street, Elmira, NY; Rabbi Miriam Biatch officiating. Internment was at Temple B’nai Israel Cemetery, Elmira.

Irving was an active professional photographer in the New York City area for over 50 years. The French Line and the Salvation Army were among his many customers. Included in this image library are historical pictures taken of well known stars and celebrities at the height of their careers.
